I started making music around 1991, recording into a Dictaphone or, “boom box”, as the Americans say. I released six cassettes in this way.
The recordings were mainly voice and acoustic guitar. I would describe them as shambolic and improvised; my guitar could have taken me to court for grievous bodily harm. Then in 1996 whilst on a day trip to the lovely and charming Faversham, I decided to purchase a four-track, and began to record music under the name Vase.
I chose the name Vase because porcelain is fragile and can be easily broken. My intention is to make music conveying a homemade sound with a melancholic tone, blending sparse acoustic and electronic structures with softly spoken vocals.
Over the years I have collaborated with George McKenzie (Headfall) and Matt and Sam Jones (Movietone /Crescent). They have added extra instrumentation, yet the songs still keep an understated, bare-bones atmosphere.
So please raise a toast to the thoughtful and gentlemanly sound of housewives favourite Vase.
